To be passionate means to have strong feelings or a strong belief. Anyone, at any point in life, can be passionate about anything. In school, I was passionate about going to college and becoming a teacher. I studied hard and did my best in high school until I found out that public school was no longer helping me. I dropped out of high school during my junior year and got my GED. After that something happened in my personal life that changed what I was passionate about. From teaching to helping people, I was determined to follow my new passion with all of my energy, faith, and focus. I was not sure how I wanted to help people but I knew that I wanted to help them when they needed it most. At the age of 19, I became a certified EMT. I volunteer with a local rescue squad to use my certification and to try to help make a difference to others. Years have passed and again my passion has changed. I will continue to use my certification to help others but I felt that I was being called to another passion. My passion continues to be helping people but in a different manner. I now work with at-risk teen boys as a youth counselor in a residential facility. The boys I work with have been through so much in their young lives. Drugs, alcohol, violence, abuse, loss, and so much more. No child should ever have to go through so much pain and trauma in their lifetime. The guarantee I have made is I will never be satisfied until… every child knows what it is like to feel loved! The role of love in the development of a child is scientifically proven to have an effect on the growth and development of the hippocampus, which can lead to the development of mental disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and later on, could lead to a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. When children are shown love it has proven to contribute to the positive and healthy growth of the hippocampus. When the hippocampi (plural for hippocampus due to humans having two) grows to a healthy size it helps develop ways to handle stress in life and helps for someone to store memories. Without the development of healthy hippocampi, children can have difficulties growing into healthy, productive, and successful adults. Many people believe that children need to be shown love through materialistic and tangible items such as toys, shoes, food, money, and other things that can be purchased. Children grow and develop well when they are giving time. Time means that someone feels that they are worth more than what money can buy. When adults and caregivers cannot show love to a young child, adolescent, or even teen that is a type of neglect. When a child is neglected in any way their development slows, they are more prone to enter into crime, depression, and anxiety can develop, and even health becomes a concern. I will never be satisfied until every child knows what it is like to feel loved. As I continue to chase my passion I want to help develop a safe and healthy place for children to go where they will get the attention, compassion, and love that they need and deserve!
