The novel Frankenstein published by Mary Shelley in the early 1818 became a really popular gothic novel. Lord  Byron one  of her  husbands friend suggested everyone in the household try to come up with a ghost story.

It inspired Mary Shelley to come up with her astounding story Frankenstein when she was just in her early teens. In her novel Victor Frankenstein was raised in Geneva after his parents decided to settle down and raise a family. He was very interested in learning about the laws of nature and alchemy since he was a thirteen year old boy.

On a dreary night Victor finally decides to attempt to create a person with dead body parts, after two years and restless nights of working on his strange yet fascinating project. As the creature comes to life, he was a hideous monster.  However, it can be argued that victor is more of a monster than the monster himself because of the cruel way he treats the monster, his selfishness, and how he tries to be god like. When the creature first saw Victor he was joyous and was similar to a new born baby, the first thing the monster did was smile and try to reach out to his creator but Victor the hateful person he is denied him and fled from his creation like a coward “His jaw opened, he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks.

. .”(Shelley,35)”one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped. . .”(35)Frankenstein flees from his creation is only the start of all the cruel acts which is caused by  fear towards his creation.

The next example of cruelty committed by Frankenstein would be him lying about making a mate for his creature.  Frankenstein says “I feared the vengeance of the disappointed fiend, yet I was unable to overcome my repugnance to the task which was enjoined me.”.

.(Shelley,108.) The quote accurately describes the cruelty Frankenstein will inflict on the monster with his lie and the reason for him to do such a thing.  This quote shows Victor is trying to create a companion for his creation but the fear he had from just one monster he had created made him too sick to make another even if his life was at risk.  The example of cruelty shown seems as if it would have to be on purpose because it is obviously a lie, but Victor’s big fear of his creation provoked him to make a promise he just could not complete. The last example of cruelty caused by Victor is his evil plan to murder what he had created.  Victor  says, “Devil, do you dare approach me? And do not you fear the fierce vengeance of my arm wreaked on your miserable head? Begone, vile insect! Or rather, stay, that I may trample you to dust! And, oh! That I could, with the extinction of your miserable existence, restore those victims whom you have so diabolically murdered!”. .

(Shelley,68) However, Frankenstein does not try to kill the supposed “monster” he created but this example shows great foreshadowing.  The quote is showing the rage that Victor is now feeling towards his creation, because of all the names being called and the threats he is making.  The foreshadowing in this quote is once again showing the fear Victor has of his creation which can be noticed when Victor is making all those frightening threats to the creature.  Victor is only trying to make his creature fear him in order for him to leave Victor alone. Body Paragraph 2 As cruel as Victor is he is also selfish.

Abandoning his creation because he is enraged that it did not come out as he expected the creature to be”I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished , and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.” It reveals how Victor is disgusted by the creature and does not even try to talk to it. Victor’s younger brother William is murdered but he has an idea of who might be up to it “He was the murder!I could not doubt it.

“(Shelley,50) Which he is speaking of the creature. Unfortunately Justine is accused of the murder due to  the creature placing the picture in which William carries of his mother into Justine’s pocket. When Victor’s younger brother is killed the accused person is Justine. When she is put on trial Victor knows who the true murder is but does not reveal who it is because he is afraid that the people will think he is insane. He does not want to take responsibility of what he has caused simply because he did not taking care of his creation. Finally, Justine is executed because she is forced to confess to the crime in which she did not commit.

Victor is even feeling sorry for himself because he knows it was his fault “Justine also was a merit, and possess qualities which promised to render her life happy; now all was to be obliterated in an ignominious grave, and I the cause!” He even admits to himself that he is responsible for justine’s death, he thinks he is at fault because he created the creature, not because he did not say anything to try and save her life.Body Paragraph 3Victor has an incredible drive to find out everything
