The Work Foundation has defined Work Life Balance as:
“Work-life balance is about
people having a measure of control over when, where and how they work. It is
achieved when an individual’s right to a fulfilled life inside and outside paid
work is accepted and respected as the norm, to the mutual benefit of the
individual, business and society.”
It is difficult for a student to maintain a proper balance between the
different roles, the individual plays such as a friend, a student, a
professional, a classmate and a responsible child.
“If you’re interested in ‘balancing’ work and pleasure, stop
trying to balance them. Instead make your work more pleasurable.” Donald Trump
For students studying at PG level, it is important to maintain a proper
balance between his college, personal and societal life in order to achieve
success. Any imbalance between institutional and personal commitments and
inefficient management of the priorities in life can lead to serious
consequences such as lower job satisfaction, poor productivity, increased
stress, diminished performance in personal and family life, poor psychological
health and poor physiological health. Nowadays due to the increase in the use
of technology in our day to day lives there is a growth in the personal and
societal life where it becomes difficult for the students to focus on the
academics which is not good for the future of the individual. However the
personal life, societal life and academics need to be given proper attention as
they all are absolutely necessary. It often happens that the students prioritize academics at the expense
of personal factors, including relationships and exercise. This could lead to a
decline in the academic performance, as general health and well-being are vital
to optimal academic functioning.
Finding ways to integrate college life and personal life is extremely
important. When the person’s life is balanced we can expect greater
productivity and also an increase in the innovativeness of the student which
could help the student on individual level as well as the institution.
For a well organised life it is important for a person to maintain an
appropriate balance between the personal, societal and organizational life.
