According to the Professional Association for Design, Graphic designing is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. Graphic design can be physical or virtual (online) and it can have words, pictures or graphics. On the other hand, according to ThoughtCo, Desktop Publishing is a term used after the development of a specific type of software. It’s about using that software to combine and rearrange text and images and creating digital files for print, online viewing, or websites.
Graphic design and desktop publishing are often intertwined. Desktop publishing is an activity used by those who do not have an art directors background, while graphic designers use desktop publishing software and techniques to create the print materials they envision. Graphic design touches on full website design, product packaging graphics, form, layout and design, and advertising design. A graphic design company can be a desktop publisher, but desktop publishing companies are not always graphic designers. Graphic Design requires considerably more expertise and experience than Desktop publishing does. Desktop publishing software aids in the creative process by allowing the designer to easily try out various page layouts, fonts, colors, and other elements. Graphic designers combine text and images to create and communicate effective messages in the form of logos, brochures, newsletters, posters, signage, websites, email campaigns, ads and a variety of other marketing devices. A graphic designer may do all or almost all these things; they may even specialize in one or more areas such as primarily logo design development or website design. With that being said, desktop publishing can be considered a component of graphic design. There are many tools used in desktop publishing, including Microsoft Publisher and Word. These tools are used to combine a text editor or word processor with at least basic tools for creating graphics and designing layouts. The tools range from home use to professional-grade software.
