2.1.10Whitman was a man who grew up in the country but lived in the city during his life and worked in the city. Dickinson was born into a successful and very religious family who lived in New England.
Whitman was a bold and expressive person and his personality showed in his writing. Whitman’s socialness and desire to write for everybody was reflected in the topics of his writing. Example would be his poem I Hear America Singing “Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam” In this quote you see how he writes and talks about others life. Whitman’s content was based on topics of patriotism and references to the bible, topics that were relevant or appropriate to everyone and anyone during that time period. In addition Whitman’s content was positive and uplifting.
In his poems Whitman also focuses on the individual and shows that individuals and their work and duties Dickinson was herself isolated however her expression of her own passion and opinions and feelings never cease to appear in her poems. Dickinson fills her poems with much more symbolism due to a fact that her poetry is not meant for all to interpret but instead for her personal purposes and gains. Dickinson’s poems, many times, focus on the themes of life. For example in 324 “Some keep the Sabbath in Surplice — I just wear my Wings — And instead of tolling the Bell, for Church, Our little Sexton — sings.
” Overall, the conclusion that can be made about these two poets is that they are both unique but on opposite ends of the poetry spectrum yet they both write their poems in a singing style. Whitman stands with pride, his flowing and optimistic writing is beloved and embraced whereas dickson is isolated and writes with far more passion and high vocab , the whole time her brilliance unrecognized. Finally, the conclusion can be made that Whitman hears the “varied carols” of all the people who contribute to the lifestyle of America. This poem emphasizes Whitman’s attitude toward America, which is part of his ideal of human life, which Whitman praises this poem with his optimism and flow whereas Dickinson represents the dark romantics poem was directed towards religion and how different Dickinson was from normal church goers. She did enjoy worshiping God, but in her own way.
